The Oneida Lake Sailing Club uses two handicaping systems to score races. The PHRF is a national rating system in which each boat is assigned a rating based on the boat speed, performance, sail inventory and other factors. . This is translated into a time factor. The actual time of boat is multiplied by the time factor to create an adjusted time. The adjusted time is used to determine a boat's finishing position.
The Oneida Lake Sailing Club also uses a Club System for handicaping
on Whitesail race nights. The club handicap for a boat will change
from week to week depending on how well a boat is sailing. In each
race the time of the first boat to finish becomes the scratch time.
The time of each boat racing is divided into the scratch time to
produce a percentage factor. The Club System Handicap for each boat
is the sum of the factors for each race divided by the number of
races sailed. Three races are required to establish a Club Hcp.
Club system handicaps cannot be transfered from fleet to fleet,
however new boats may race with a handicap of 1.000 until they complete
the required number of races.
