This week’s
Wednesday night race was a wild one. Storms were threatening causing one
boat to drop out prior to the race to avoid any potential scramble to the
dock, but all others stuck it out for the fun. Race started with light breeze
around 5 knots out of the West / Southwest. Race committee dropped a buoy
towards Callahan’s marina with a W2 (orange buoy – 107) plus
W1 (back to Orange buoy downwind finish) course. First leg up saw quite
a few tacks with a beat to the first mark. Boats rounded and set spinnakers
and only a couple hundred feet from the leeward mark they got hit with a
squall line from the passing dark clouds above. No thunder or lightning,
just some big gusts and a couple drops of rain with wind sustaining between
15 – 20 kts with gusts in the mid to upper 20’s. At least 4
boats got knocked over with Apres-Ski getting the kite down early (also
exploded it down the seams) and got around the mark in good shape. Apres-ski
took the win in division 2 and 4th overall and Realething held things together
in the squall line as well to take 1st in Division 1 and overall.
